NVC at Donovan Correctional Facility

About the Program

Under the umbrella of Brilliance Inside, Sunaina facilitates Nonviolent Communication programs for residents at Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. Volunteers are always welcome!

Click here for stories from past iterations of this program that show how much growth occurs in these groups, both for the residents and for the volunteers. It has been inspiring to connect with individuals who are committed to learning, and to create a community of trust and care together.

Each weekly two-hour gathering is among about 5 volunteers and 20-25 Donovan residents who have chosen to participate in the program. We share as a group and participate in activities to learn about how all behavior can be seen as meeting underlying needs, and how that consciousness can help us speak and connect with empathy and peace.

Becoming a Volunteer

Interested volunteers should email Sunaina (sunaina.chugani@gmail.com) sharing how they heard about this work, why they’d like to volunteer, and any relevant experience (if any, this is not required).

If there seems to be a good fit and if there is space on the team, interested volunteers will be asked to submit a clearance application. This application has to be approved before you can come inside, and it takes about seven weeks to process.

Essential Information for Volunteers

Once cleared, make sure you have carefully read everything on this document before your first visit. There is a strict dress code, behavioral guidelines, and restrictions on what you can bring inside. Please ask Sunaina if you have any questions about anything on this document.

For those not carpooling, we will meet at the staff entrance of the Alpha Yard of Donovan Correctional Facility at 5:55pm. We will enter together at 6pm and the program will run from 6:30-8:30pm. You will be back at your car around 9pm.
